My brother’s friend Neil told me that he was going to Mass MoCA yesterday basically just to rub it in. He sent me the link to the show he was going to see, Material World: Sculpture to Environment, which looked amazing and was right up my alley. Many of the artists in the show I had never heard of, which was awesome and while Neil will guest post about what he saw I just had to post about Orly Genger because her stuff was too cool!

The below of made of simply nylon rope and paint – a LOT of it! The interesting thing I like is how the paint hardens the rope. In building my yurt I’ve thought a lot about coatings for the wool that could change and potentially protect the exterior so the idea of paint is new. I don’t think it would work on the wool but it’s cool to see what it does to the nylon.

The piece of info I wish that her gallery had is how she weaves the ropes. A clip of a video I watched makes me think it’s done physically without hooks and needles in many cases, which is what I’ve learned I’ll have to do for the yurt too – a woman after my own heart!

I love that she fills rooms with various weaves and patterns into piles of organized, oversized works – they’re amazing. I love the growing, overflowing quality of the pieces. Who knew knit work could be so intimidating and massive! Look for Neil’s upcoming posts on the other artists in the exhibit, hopefully they’ll be soon!
